I received this crab last week, it is doing well, and has eaten plenty of lettuce so far, as well as grapes. I think it may be a mostly terrestrial species, it doesnt seem to use a water area, it is around 6-7cm, any idea what species?

Hi Kevin
I moved the topic to the right subforum ("Species identification" = Artbestimmung).
Hopefully I can tell more tomorrow evening, today I haven't the time.

Hi Kevin,
hadn't have the time yet, sorry!
Since You say it shall be a land crab I would assume it could be a madagassian crab. But some Asian genii as Barythelphusa, Stoliczia, Ranguna, Potamiscus, Potamon or Liothelphusa etc. could be possible.
I can't see anything on that picture except from colors (which doesn't help much) and the overall carapax shape, I can't even see if there are tiny little teeth at the antero-lateral margin or if it is smooth.
I need to see the face and photos from straight above and from front-forward, I need to see if there teeth at the antero-lateral margin, I need to see the lobes and grooves on the carapax, the teeth of the scissors and the chelipeds form above (Are there spines or teeth, where exactly, how many?)…

Hm, I just searchd some three hours but to be honest I still can't say more than it is a potamid (Family Potamidae). I would need better pictures of the face (where I can differentiate sutures and ruptures on the third maxilliped and its appendages), I need good pictures of the pleon and sternum, of the scissors (from above and from the front), from the walking legs and from the carapax from above (different angles).
Anyway it could be a new, undescribd species…

I'll try to get better pics, I dont have access to a digital camera though (only my brothers mobile phone) so I may not be able to get very clear pics.
I should hopefully be able to get more of this species next spring, maybe I could send one to you if it still isnt identified by then? thats interesting that it may be a new species.

Hi Kevin
You could, of course. And if – we won't hope it, but it happens – a specimen dies You could send this. For IDing it's the same (or even better).
